For decades, the Family Center on Deafness (FCD) has been a vital resource for Pinellas County’s Deaf and Hard of Hearing community, providing a space where communication, education, and independence thrive. However, when Hurricanes Helene and Milton devastated their campus last year, FCD was faced with an enormous challenge: rebuilding from the ground up.

Thankfully, with the support of Pinellas Community Foundation (PCF) grants, FCD was able to navigate this challenge and emerge stronger than ever. With grant funding from PCF, FCD secured a new home within the Lealman Exchange, ensuring their essential programs could continue. This move has not only restored what was lost—it has expanded opportunities for students and families.

A New Beginning at Lealman Exchange

FCD’s new space at the Lealman Exchange is more than just a building—it’s a launchpad for growth and connection. Here, children have access to a full-size gym, large classrooms, and much-needed space for learning, socializing, and building confidence.

Thanks to PCF’s grant support, FCD was able to make a seamless transition into this new space, ensuring their programs remained uninterrupted. With the security of PCF funding, FCD’s team could focus on what they do best—empowering Deaf and Hard of Hearing individuals through education and community support.

As a result, more families than ever are enrolling in FCD’s programs after recognizing its unique, impactful approach and the powerhouse team behind its success.

Empowering Futures Through Literacy and Education

Beyond academics, FCD is shaping futures by prioritizing literacy skills and educational access. Elementary students in their programs have shown remarkable improvements in reading levels, proving that when accessibility meets the right support, progress follows.

PCF’s funding has enabled FCD to expand their literacy and academic programs, giving more children the chance to develop critical skills for their future. Through their work, FCD is not only changing individual lives but also reshaping the broader Deaf and Hard of Hearing community’s access to education.
