Celebrating a Year of Impact: 2023 PCF Achievements

In 2023, Pinellas Community Foundation (PCF) continued its mission to support and uplift the local community, granting over $10 million across various sectors. These efforts touched countless lives, from providing essentials to seniors through Reach St. Pete’s Mobile Grocery Store to fostering creativity in students via the Morean Arts Center’s Word & Image program. Our strategic grants supported 257 nonprofits, ensuring that essential services such as education, health, and the arts remain robust.

Our role goes beyond providing grants; we also assist organizations in planning for their long-term sustainability. A prime example of this is our collaboration with Personal Enrichment through Mental Health Services (PEMHS). Together, we established a Reserve Fund that strengthened PEMHS’s financial security, allowing them to continue providing critical behavioral health services. This partnership highlights how PCF helps nonprofits not only meet their immediate needs but also prepare for a sustainable future.

We extend our deepest gratitude to our donors, whose trust in PCF and commitment to philanthropy enable us to make a long-lasting impact on our community. Your generosity not only addresses today’s needs but also ensures that future generations will benefit from the work we are doing together. We encourage others to consider establishing an endowment or other charitable plans with PCF, as it is a meaningful way to honor your values and leave a lasting legacy in the community you love.

As we reflect on this past year, we are proud of the partnerships we’ve forged and the lives we’ve touched. The work we’ve done with our community partners reaffirms our belief in the power of collaboration to create meaningful and lasting change.

How PEMHS and PCF Are Partnering to Boost Nonprofit Financial Health

Personal Enrichment through Mental Health Services (PEMHS)—a nonprofit working hard to enhance community well-being with behavioral health services—teamed up with Pinellas Community Foundation (PCF) to set up a Reserve Fund. But why would a nonprofit decide to start a Reserve Fund?

It’s all about being smart with their finances. “We used to work with whatever funds we had,” Helena from PEMHS explained. “But as expenses grew, we realized we could use money from property sales in a more impactful way.”

With this strategy, PEMHS was able to put $850,000 into their Reserve Fund. This setup gives them a financial safety net and also lets them earn extra returns on their investment.

Why PCF Was the Perfect Choice

Choosing PCF was a no-brainer for PEMHS. “PCF is more than just a funding source; they’re a trusted partner in our community,” Helena said. “Their dedication aligns with ours, and their know-how made them the perfect fit for managing our fund.”

Partnering with PCF meant more than just financial security for PEMHS. “It felt like the perfect match—we trust each other, and [PCF] understands our mission,” Helena added. PCF has created a Reserve Fund set-up process so nonprofits can enjoy a “piece of cake” experience. “It was super easy,” Helena said. “PCF walked us through every step and made sure we had everything we needed. The process was totally seamless.”

By making the set-up process so straightforward, PCF allows PEMHS to stay focused on its mission while our team handles the nitty gritty world of investment with ease on behalf of the nonprofit.

Now What?

With the Reserve Fund in place, PEMHS is ready to make an even bigger impact in Pinellas County. Supported by the 50+ years of experience at PCF, PEMHS feels confident they’re prepared for whatever comes next. Donor Spotlight: Stephen Miller

What made you initially decide to move your money to Pinellas Community Foundation?

What made you initially decide to move your money to Pinellas Community Foundation?

For the majority of my career, I have been a CPA. Many of my clients had Donor-Advised Funds (DAFs), and my wife and I started our self-guided DAF at Schwab. Frankly, we didn’t have a relationship with anyone there. They didn’t provide input regarding available charities or planning as to how donations should be made. It was a nameless, faceless relationship. Additionally, I started to realize that my follow-through didn’t match my intentions, as I wasn’t donating what I wanted to.

I started to ponder who I knew in the community and set up some interviews with the local community foundations. There was a stark difference in their energy and approach. I found PCF to be warm and personable. It struck me that if I moved my account to PCF, I would have a relationship with people who are aware of what is going on in the community, thereby making me more likely to give. The relationship with PCF was the key deciding factor.

Now that I have it set up, I follow through when I feel the impulse to give, and I still get the tax benefit I need from contributing to a DAF. The staff is available to assist with various needs, including answering questions, helping with administrative tasks in the donor portal, and guiding me in identifying local charities that are suitable for funding.

“I’ve got a guy!” I have a guy who fixes my car—now I have an organization I can trust. PCF is my charity guy!

What has your experience been with PCF holding your DAF?

What has your experience been with PCF holding your DAF?

I think the real test of your DAF is who you will have a relationship with at the organization. At PCF, you will have a relationship with people who take the time to get to know you and assist you when you need it. You’ll see them in action firsthand and quickly develop a sense of the kind of relationship you’ll have with your DAF.
