QCD Giving in 2026: A Tax-Smart Way to Support Community
Have you ever wondered whether there’s a smarter way to give from your retirement savings — without adding to your tax bill?
If you’re 70½ or older with a traditional IRA, there is. A qualified charitable distribution — more commonly called a QCD — is one of the most efficient and underused giving tools available to donors today. And yet most people only hear about it when a financial advisor or CPA brings it up. If no one has mentioned it to you yet, consider this your introduction.
What a QCD Actually Is
A QCD is a direct transfer from your individual retirement account to a qualifying charitable organization. Instead of withdrawing funds and donating the cash yourself, you instruct your IRA custodian to send the gift directly to the charity on your behalf.
Because the money moves straight from your IRA to the organization — never passing through your hands — it never becomes personal income. That one distinction is what makes a QCD different from simply writing a check.
What It Does For You
For donors who are 73 or older, a QCD counts toward your required minimum distribution for the year. In 2026, you can direct up to $108,000 annually through this method.
But the more significant benefit for many donors isn’t the RMD satisfaction — it’s the income reduction. When you make a QCD, the amount given is excluded from your taxable income entirely. That’s different from claiming a charitable deduction. A deduction reduces what you’re taxed on after income is counted. A QCD keeps the amount from being counted as income in the first place.
That difference can matter more than it appears. Lowering your adjusted gross income may reduce Medicare premium surcharges — known as IRMAA — help you stay below certain tax brackets, reduce the portion of Social Security benefits subject to tax, and simplify your overall financial picture in ways a standard deduction cannot.
The Rules Worth Knowing
QCDs are straightforward, but a few rules apply. The distribution must come from a traditional IRA. You must be 70½ or older at the time of the gift. The annual limit in 2026 is $108,000 per person. And the gift must go directly to a qualifying 501(c)(3) charitable organization — QCDs cannot fund donor-advised funds, supporting organizations, or private foundations.
How It Works With PCF
PCF accepts QCDs directly, and the process is simpler than most donors expect.
First, decide where you’d like your gift directed. A QCD can support PCF’s operating funds, a specific fund you care about, or a field of interest you’d like to invest in across Pinellas County. Second, contact your IRA custodian and ask them to initiate a qualified charitable distribution to Pinellas Community Foundation. We can provide the information your custodian needs to complete the transfer. Third, let us know it’s on the way. We’ll watch for the transfer, send your acknowledgment, and make sure your gift is directed exactly as you intend.
That’s it. No complicated paperwork on your end. No check to write and mail. Just a direct, efficient gift from your retirement savings to the community you care about.
Why It Matters Beyond the Tax Savings
The practical benefits of a QCD are real. But for many donors, what resonates most isn’t the tax efficiency — it’s the clarity. Knowing that your retirement savings are doing something meaningful. Knowing that your gift is landing in a community you’ve invested in for years. Knowing that your giving has a structure, a strategy, and a partner who understands both.
That’s what giving through PCF is designed to feel like.
If you’re considering a QCD this year — or simply want to understand whether it fits your situation — we’d welcome the conversation. Our team can walk through the options in plain language, help you identify the right fund or purpose for your gift, and coordinate with your advisor or IRA custodian as needed.
Please note: QCD rules are specific and personal tax situations vary. Always consult your tax advisor or IRA custodian before initiating a gift.
