Philanthropic Giving Made Easier at PCF

Life can be hard to balance. Managing work responsibilities, relationships with family and friends, and personal health and wellness, it’s common to feel like there isn’t time in the week for much more. Giving back to the community is a core value for many, but it can be challenging to make philanthropic giving a reality.

At Pinellas Community Foundation, we believe in removing barriers that can prevent people from helping others. We are pleased to announce a new way to start charitable giving plans with PCF: an online application that streamlines the process of opening a donor-advised fund.

A donor-advised fund (DAF) is a dedicated account for charitable giving to any IRS-qualified charity. Consider it a flexible spending account, much like a health savings account (HSA) but for giving to your favorite nonprofits. When you open a DAF at Pinellas Community Foundation, you receive your tax benefit right away and can advise PCF over time on which charities you want to receive the funds.

Many people feel strongly about the issues that are affecting our community, but don’t know which organizations are actually doing the work to solve the problems. For more than 50 years, PCF has built relationships with nonprofit partners addressing the needs of Pinellas County. We know the missions, programs, services, impact, and effectiveness of partner agencies. These insights help PCF donors to make the right choice for charitable gifts.

Perhaps you have heard about donor advised funds from your financial advisor, the person who does your taxes, or a trusted friend. Maybe you have thought of opening a DAF but were concerned about how long it would take or didn’t have time to make an appointment to start the fund during your busy week.

Establishing a DAF Is Easy With Pinellas Community Foundation

You can now fill out and submit a simple application online anytime or anywhere. PCF does not request sensitive information, like account numbers or social security numbers, in these online forms so that you can feel safe. We manage the administrative details for you and will be there at any point in the process if you have any questions or concerns.

Once the application is received, a short fund agreement, typically 3-4 pages, is prepared within two business days. You can sign the agreement electronically and securely through DocuSign, in person at a PCF office located in Clearwater or St. Petersburg, or in the comfort of your own space, as PCF can mail you your fund agreement.

PCF distributes the charitable funds on your behalf, eliminating ongoing paperwork and receipt management. PCF can make donations anonymously to protect your privacy and prevent follow-up solicitations from charities.

Unlike other community foundations or large financial institutions, the minimum contribution to open a DAF with Pinellas Community Foundation is $5,000. You can contribute individually or ask friends, family, or coworkers to donate to your fund. You may also donate stock, real estate, mutual funds, property, and land.
