Tampa Bay Watch(TBW) is dedicated to fostering a healthy Tampa Bay watershed through hands-on restoration projects, education programs, and community outreach. The organization provides essential learning opportunities for individuals of all ages, encouraging them to become stewards of the region’s unique ecosystems.
Serving underserved communities is at the core of Tampa Bay Watch’s mission, ensuring that everyone has access to meaningful marine science education. Through support from PCF, the organization is able to reach students who would otherwise lack access to these transformative learning experiences.
Expanding Access to Marine Science Education
TBW works to make marine science education available to all students. Serving Title I schools in Pinellas County, as well as other underserved groups in the region, the organization removes barriers to participation by providing low- to no-cost programs. TBW can offer transportation assistance, adapt programs for special needs students, and ensure all students can engage in hands-on environmental learning.
In 2024, Tampa Bay Watch’s education programs reached over 20,000 students and provided 25,000 service interactions. These students participated in activities that deepened their understanding of Tampa Bay’s estuaries, environmental issues, and protection methods. By eliminating barriers like transportation costs and individual accommodations, the organization ensures that no one is turned away from learning about their local ecosystem.
Adapting to Meet Community Needs
PCF’s unrestricted funding has enabled Tampa Bay Watch to creatively adapt to the needs of its diverse community. The flexibility of these funds supports staff development, curriculum creation, and even emergency needs such as extra educational supplies or additional staff. This ability to adjust quickly ensures that programs can be tailored to meet the specific goals of each group.
One example of this adaptability is the free “pop-up” camp that brings the magic of marine science into neighborhoods for students who might not otherwise have access to summer camps. This program is just one way this organization continues to expand its reach while remaining responsive to community needs.
Hands-On Experiential Learning
Education programs go beyond the classroom with TBW, offering immersive learning opportunities at the Auer Marine Education Center in Tierra Verde, the TBW Discovery Center on the St. Pete Pier, and through its mobile classroom. These experiences allow students to explore the ecosystems of Tampa Bay firsthand, building a lasting connection with the environment. In addition to field trips and classroom activities, TBW offers boat-based exploration and eco-tours, providing students with an in-depth look at their local watershed.
Measuring Success and Impact
Tampa Bay Watch’s educational efforts have shown impressive results. After just one session, 52% of students showed improvement in their ability to answer questions about marine science topics. For week-long programs, such as the pop-up camp, knowledge improvement was even more significant, with over 95% of students able to answer questions correctly by the end of the week.
Looking Ahead: Continued Growth and Engagement
With continued support from PCF, TBW can expand its programs to serve even more students and community members. The organization is committed to ensuring that everyone has access to marine science education, empowering the next generation of environmental stewards.
Through its flexibility and innovative approach, TBW is shaping a community that understands the importance of protecting Tampa Bay’s vital ecosystems. By making marine science accessible to all, this organization is helping create lasting change for both the environment and the people who call Tampa Bay home.
